After a successful and enjoyable time last year, Lockwood returned to Amboise in the Loire valley to take part in the French Open for the second time. The schedule for the contest involves a contest, an open March competition and a short concert. For the contest Lockwood were the only band competing in the second section so unsurprisingly came away as winners, but were delighted when the bands principal Euphonium player David Shawcross was announced best soloist at the contest for all sections, which contained mainly Championship section bands. The contest was opened with Olympic Fanfare & Theme, followed by David’s performance of Brilliante. The set test piece for the section was Variations on Laudate Dominum.
The March contest was contested by six bands including Lockwood, with the majority being from the Championship section. Lockwood were the last band to make their way to the packed square beneath the Chateaux to perform Army of the Nile before marching back out to Hollyrood. Considering the high calibre of the other bands in the competition we were delighted to be placed third, behind the Wingates and Flowers bands.
